Welcome

I'm so glad you're here

This conference has been months in the making, and what you'll find in today's program reflects something our Board felt strongly about: when marketing and BD work in real alignment, everything gets better for clients, firms, and the people doing the work.

Today is a day to think, talk, meet someone new, and learn alongside colleagues who understand exactly what you're navigating. I hope you leave with ideas you can bring straight back to your work tomorrow, plus a few new people in your corner.

I also want to share the biggest heartfelt thank you to the conference committee who collectively dedicated so much time and energy to make today possible: Andrea Falcone, Sarah Short, Emma Grimshaw, and Madi Frampton, with help from Robyn Bews as well. I could not be more grateful for each of you!

Now, let's go have an awesome day.

Warmly,

Katie

Beyond Billable Hours: What If Marketing and BD Ran the Firm?

Marketing and BD professionals spend their careers trying to influence decisions made in a world they don't fully control: partner compensation, practice investment, pricing strategy, lateral hiring. This session flips the dynamic. Attendees run the firm.

The Law Firm Growth Game puts small teams in charge of a fictional law firm through a series of rounds, making real choices across investment priorities, client relationships, talent, risk and market position. Every decision moves the dials. Every trade-off has consequences.

Key takeaways

  • Understand the commercial pressures and trade-offs that drive partner decision-making, and why the business case for BD investment so often gets lost in translation.
  • Experience a firm's growth challenges from the inside out and reframe your role from service provider to strategic advisor.
  • Build the commercial vocabulary to engage partners and firm leadership in the language of business outcomes, not marketing activity.
  • See how experiential learning teaches the business of law, a format that also works well for making lawyers more commercially aware.

3:00 – 5:00 pm · Parkdale Room

CMO and First Chair Roundtable

A peer-to-peer forum for CMOs and BD leaders to pressure-test where revenue may be leaking, whether through pitch economics, experience data or siloed systems, and leave with two or three practical actions to implement this quarter. A facilitated discussion among peers, not a lecture.

On the table

  • Where is revenue really leaking: pitch time, stale experience data, or disconnected systems? How would each firm know?
  • What quick wins does everyone agree on but nobody has staffed?
  • How much of the AI conversation in legal BD is signal versus noise for a 50–350 attorney firm?
  • What governance must exist before AI touches client-facing pitch content?
  • What one metric should this group track quarter over quarter to make the case internally?

Session lead: Michael Mellor, 742 Advisors

5:15 – 7:00 pm · Kensington Foyer

Cocktail Reception

The conference closes with a cocktail reception, and this year it doubles as the Toronto social you know and love. Our socials are consistently our most attended events, and for good reason: there is nothing quite like this community when it's in a room together.

The reception is brought to you by Lexpert, celebrating the 30th edition of the Canadian Legal Directory. Since 1997, Lexpert has been the peer-driven standard for recognizing Canada's leading legal practitioners and firms, and a longtime supporter of LMA Canada. Thank you, Lexpert!
